Bonis, Mel
Suite in the old style Suite dans le style ancien
Version for wind septet
score and parts
2 flutes, oboe, clarinet in Bb, 2 bassoons and horn in F
This "Suite in the old style" was written by Mel Bonis in two different versions: in a version for piano, flute, violin and viola (or clarinet in B flat), which was published in 2005 by Edition Kossack (98017), and in the version for wind septet presented here (2 flutes, oboe, clarinet in B flat, horn in F and 2 bassoons).
The work was not published during the composer's lifetime. A manuscript from 1913 for organ contains the first two pieces of the suite, Prélude and Fuguette; the manuscript of the septet version is undated; the quartet version was written in 1928.
The manuscript of the septet contains only the parts. Around 1950 - probably at the instigation of her daughter Jeanne Brochot - a calligraphed copy of the work was made, containing the score and individual parts. The present edition is based on these two versions.
